Text: Every year, thousands of complaints are lodged against the network of nursing homes and long-term care facilities that provide for the most vulnerable members of our elderly community. The task of investigating and helping to resolve these complaints, which range from relatively minor quality of life issues to more serious and complex matters, is handled by a small group of volunteers.
These people are OMBUDSMEN. They visit nursing homes and long-term care facilities, getting to know the residents as people and becoming problem-solvers, mandated reporters of elder abuse and, most important, ADVOCATES for elderly people who are often unable to effectively speak for themselves.
Most people would agree that this is a good cause, if for no other reason than the simple fact that we will all be elderly, and some of us may need a helping hand ourselves. The problem is finding that rare individual who is willing to VOLUNTEER. Maybe you are one of those people.
Our FREE 36-HOUR TRAINING will prepare you to become a member of this team. It leads to certification by the California Department of Aging and offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the health care services field. Or simply to play a part in improving the quality of life of some elderly resident.
We especially encourage RETIRED PERSONS, members of the AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, and BILINGUAL SPEAKERS able to converse with people in such languages as CHINESE, SPANISH, and RUSSIAN, to join our team of volunteers.
There is no better time than the holiday season, with its abundance of riches, to take the first step. Act today! You can make a difference in people's lives. To learn more about the rewards and challenges of becoming an advocate for the elderly, call Judith at 415-751-9788.
