Day care thrives with help of council
CONCORD: County agency offers guidance, health tips to child care providers and parents
By Danielle Samaniego
CONTRA COSTA TIMES
Stepping into Mijghan Khoudjou's home, the first thing one notices is the relative silence -- a small miracle considering the in-house day care is crawling with toddlers.
Khoudjou credits her skills to the guidance she's received through the Contra Costa Child Care Council.
"When I started this profession I was just a mom, and it's amazing how much success I've had, and I know it's because of the Child Care Council," Khoudjou said. "Ever since I opened my business, they have helped me find clients -- they help (child care) providers to grow."
Fostering growth in child care has been the council's business for the past 30 years. This year the council celebrates its anniversary as the county's premiere child care referral agency. Since its inception the nonprofit organization has expanded to include family assistance, resources for parents and child care providers, disseminating child care information to the community and advocating for a bigger and better child care system.
"We've grown tremendously over the last years, but beyond that I think we've improved over the years in terms of child care," said Executive Director Catherine Ertz-Berger, who has been there for more than 20 years. "I think our organization makes a significant difference to the lives and children in Contra Costa County."
The council also provides training, technical assistance, consultation and support to more than 1,600 child care providers countywide, including informal caregivers such as grandparents, other relatives and nannies.
Khoudjou's a single mom who balances her work and a college schedule. She's taking classes at Diablo Valley College to get her associate's degree in early childhood development. That's on top of other accreditation courses she's taken since she opened her Small Steps day care nearly six years ago.
Shilpa Pathare, a 37-year-old Concord resident, originally sought the council's help to find a day care provider for her then 6-month-old son, Tanay. Not only did Pathare find the council helpful, but soon she also found she needed further assistance when her son wasn't talking as much as other 2-year-olds.
Her day care provider recommended getting a speech counselor through the council's Inclusion Project, which helps parents with children with special needs.
"I wasn't terribly concerned about his speech, but I thought it wouldn't hurt," Pathare said. "She worked with him for about three or four months. ... And toward the end of it, he was almost 3 at that point, he very quickly started speaking."
Now Tanay is in regular preschool and on par with the rest of his classmates, Pathare said.
"We went into this inclusion program without high expectations ... so we were very pleasantly surprised on how much it helped him," she said.
On a recent afternoon, Khoudjou's attentive group hunkers down to a small table with bowls of red materials. The children pick and pluck items for their projects, creating artwork on paper. It's all about visual stimulation through creativity rather than, say, television. The care provider credits such activities with the materials and key training classes she's taken over the years at the council.
"I get so much help," Khoudjou said. "Anything from private problems to business and growth, they help with everything. I feel grateful to have them around."
