Maybe you've always wanted to learn drumset or mallet percussion like the xylophone, but never took the time. Or maybe your children are budding drummers-with pots and pans! Whatever your background, I can help.
As a professional musician and teacher I have over fifteen years experience. I am a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and have a Masters from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I perform throughout the Bay Area in a wide variety of situations. These include orchestras like the Sacramento Philharmonic, Berkeley Symphony or Mendocino Festival Orchestra; musicals at City College, Musical Theatre Works and the Berkeley Repertory Theater among other theaters; and as a jazz/freelance drummer in clubs everywhere. I'm timpanist with the Golden Gate Park Band am also drum teacher at the Northern California Music, Art & Culture Center in SF.
For me, the drumset is an instrument independent of any style- there's a way to play it regardless of the music you perform. One of the most important things to develop on any percussion instrument is a relaxed, natural approach to playing. This is my primary aim in teaching- a relaxed, natural way of playing which leads to a lifetime of drumming enjoyment.
With this in mind, I focus on:
• Playing with the natural rebound of the stick
• Cultivating a loose and correct grip
• The coordination of various limbs into a relaxed, balanced whole
• Reading skills and the development of good time
• The proper balance of differant parts as they operate in a groove or fill
Once you have the fundamentals, you will have the ability to venture into any musical style you want!
I teach both adults and children. Absolute beginners as well as those more advanced. My lessons are divided between work on the practice pad where we hone in on technical issues and work at the drumset. Of course, I try my best to make it all fun!
My rates are $30.00 for an hour lesson, $25.00 for a 45 minute lesson or $20.00 for a half hour lesson. Please contact me if you would like to further discuss lessons for yourself or child.
